Our new multi-purpose building !

The name Y Caban refers to shelters in Welsh slate quarries used by the workers during their breaks. They became valued meeting places for debating and singing as well as eating and drinking.

Two of our steam engines, Irish Mail and Sybil, worked at the Dinorwic quarry for many years, giving our Railway a strong link with North Wales. It is therefore appropriate that our new multi-purpose visitor and volunteer centre will have the name Y Caban.

The building will make a big difference to how we can look after both our visitors and our volunteers.

It will be a tea-room, a meeting room and an activity centre, catering for about 40 people. It will be a focal point for school visits, where pupils can learn about heritage railways and their role in serving a variety of industries.

it will also act as a shelter and meeting-point for the volunteers who keep our Railway operating. It is due for completion in the second half of 2026 - see below for photos of progress!

Building Y Caban will cost around £200,000. About 75% of that will come from grants from the Rural England Prosperity Fund and the West Lancashire Borough Council Community Investment Fund.

However we still need to raise £45,000 to complete the job.
