Access statement

We welcome all potential visitors, members and volunteers. If you would like to discuss specific needs, please contact us here.

Cars and buses

Free car parking is available at the rear of the Railway. A wide, sloping tarmac path leads up to the main entrance. There is no charge for entry.

Stagecoach bus No.2 runs past the site, normally on an hourly service when we are open. The bus stop is about 100m from our site.

Trains

Our coaches have fairly narrow access openings which will not take wheelchairs. There is a step up from the platform to the coach, via a running board at an intermediate height.

At the discretion of the guard, wheelchair users may travel in the guards van, with access via a ramp. However there are no side windows, so the view is restricted.

A coach with wheelchair access is under construction in our workshops. It should be ready in the second half of 2024.

Pushchairs are best left at the rear of the platform at Becconsall rather than carried on trains. Motorised chairs and mobility scooters are permitted on the platform, although on busy event days access may be limited.

Stations

The platform at Becconsall, the main station, is level and paved, with level access to the ticket office. At Delph, at the far end of the line, the ground is gravelled and there is no raised platform. Alighting from the train is optional.

Other areas

Other parts of the premises have a variety of surfaces, including paving, concrete, gravel, stone and grass.  There are no steps, and the ground is generally level.

Toilets

Toilets with level access are provided near the ticket office. They include facilities for disabled passengers.

Dogs

Well-behaved dogs on a lead are welcome, and there is no charge for travel. On Santa Specials (which are normally fully-booked) you may need to book a whole compartment, unless your dog is small enough to sit on your lap.
